How to Read a Used Truck: What Mileage Does Not Tell You

Mileage is the first number every used truck shopper looks at, and it is one of the least useful predictors of condition. In Texas, where trucks tow, haul, and spend time on unpaved roads, how a truck was used matters far more than how far it went. Here is how to read the difference.

Highway miles versus work miles

A truck with 90,000 highway commuting miles has had an easier life than one with 60,000 miles spent pulling a loaded trailer on ranch roads. Look for the evidence:

• Wear on the hitch receiver, ball mount, and trailer wiring connector
• Aftermarket brake controller installation
• Scrapes and dents on skid plates, running boards, and the underside of the front bumper
• Suspension sag or added helper springs
• A bed liner installed over damage rather than before it

None of this disqualifies a truck. A well maintained work truck can be a strong buy. It just belongs in the price conversation.

What to look at underneath

Get a flashlight and look. You want dry components with no fluid seepage, intact bushings and boots, no fresh undercoating that might be hiding something, and no signs of frame repair or welding. Central Texas trucks generally avoid salt corrosion, so meaningful rust on a local truck deserves an explanation.

Service records tell the real story

Ask for records. Consistent oil changes matter on any engine and matter more on turbocharged and diesel engines. Also look for transmission service, differential service on four wheel drive trucks, and coolant service. A thick folder of receipts is worth paying for.

Immediate costs to price in

Two items routinely surprise buyers within the first few months:

• Tires. A set of light truck tires is a significant expense. Check tread depth and whether all four match.
• Brakes. Check pad thickness and rotor condition. Towing and stop and go traffic both accelerate wear.

If either is near the end of its life, that is real money coming out of your pocket soon, and it belongs in your offer.

Test drive checklist

• Highway speed for vibration, wander, and alignment pull
• Firm braking from speed in a safe area to check for pulsation
• Four wheel drive engagement in both high and low range where appropriate
• Air conditioning at full output for the entire drive
• Every window, lock, camera, screen function, and power outlet
